Forest Wagon

My goal for this project was to model a wagon and put it into an environment in UE4. I wanted to use this to combine and refine my skills in both 3D modelling and technical art.

I wanted to show it within the context of a wider environment, so I used a combination of megascans foliage and trees from "Landscape Pro 2.0 Auto-Generated Material" pack by STF3d to build a forest around it.

Some shots of the interior assets. The real wagon has a cluttered, lived-in feel that I wanted to replicate.

I was lucky enough to be able to gather first-hand reference for this project, which helped me massively. Something I am trying to get better at is following reference and basing my work in reality, rather than assuming I know what something looks like.

The shaders were kept very simple, with usability being the core goal. As the roof is quite large, I decided to use a separate detail normal with a tiling canvas pattern that I could customise, rather than bake everything into one texture.

I wanted to get some different looks for wood without having to manually re-texture everything, so I made some planks in substance designer and created a material that would give me a lot of customisation options.

For the landscape, I made a material based on a helpful video by Ben Cloward. I wanted a way to get rid of obvious tiling, and I wanted to include some tesselation and displacement without too high a performance cost.

Here's some wireframe renders of the final caravan model. I aimed to keep it optimised so that it could feasibly exist in a game.

Some detail shots. In my past works I have modeled assets that look too pristine - so for this one I wanted to pay closer attention to details and wear and tear to give some extra realism.

Some details on the base of the wagon. The shapes of the beams were very interesting to work on!

Lastly, an alternate shot of the caravan at night.

Forest Wagon

This is a project I've been working on for a while, and have been wanting to make for even longer! It's based on a wagon owned by my parents, and I thought it would make an excellent opportunity to practice both my 3D modelling and my technical art.
